We saw the movie Travellers and Magicians, entirely filmed in Bhutan, at the Chicago Film Festival in 2003. I never imagined that I would travel to Bhutan, but here we are. And I never imagined I would see the spot where a scene in the movie was filmed. The movie is about a young government official named Dondup, who is smitten with America, dreams of escaping there while stuck in a beautiful but isolated village. He hopes to travel to the U.S. He misses the one bus out of town to Thimphu and is forced to hitchhike and walk, eventually meeting people including an apple seller, a Buddhist monk, a drunk, and a widowed rice paper maker and his daughter. One of the scenes takes place in a cave which is just by the road. The cave is filled with tsa tsas, which are small cone sculptures containing a little bit of ash or hair from the deceased person. We saw lots of these along the road at many other caves and stupas.
